The Electronics Epidemic
Let’s face it: You’ve become obsessed with your electronic device(s).
People are becoming obsessed with their phones, tablets, Tvs, ipads, etc. Except lots of people don’t realize that too much screen time can hurt you. That’s right, you heard me. Too much screen time can hurt you.
I think that people shouldn’t be on their electronics so much. Besides being totally obsessed, there are serious side effects. People should limit the time that they spend on their electronics and stay healthy.
Here is some information to support my opinion:
Too much time on electronics can actually damage your brain and eyes.
Taken together, (studies show) internet and electronic addiction is connected with structural and functional changes in the brain area including emotional handling, focusing on things, being patient, decision making, listening to directions, and being responsible. — Research authors summarizing neuro-imaging findings in internet and gaming addiction (Lin & Zhou et al, 2012).
Lots of screen time can also damage the eyes. Blue lights from screens keeps us awake but that isn’t all. It can also damage the retina, and eye strain from too much device use is increasing. A report by CBS had a few recommendations, including the 20-20-20 rule: after 20 minutes of staring at a screen, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Plus, try to use dimmer light settings instead of letting them burn brightly for hours at a time.
Also, excessive exposure to bright electronic screens can actually reduce your blinking rates and can give you physical discomfort after two or more hours in front of a digital screen too.
Too much screen time also causes children to be less active.
Research reveals children are becoming weaker, less muscular, and unable to do simple tasks that previous generations found simple. Because of too much electronic time, 10 year olds can do fewer sit-ups and are less able to hang from wall bars in the gym. Arm strength has lessened in that age group and so has their ability to grip an object firmly. Previous research has shown that children are becoming more unfit and in many cases, heavier than before.
Children are less active than their parents were when they were kids. According to studies, children are taking 90 seconds longer to run a mile than kids 30 years ago. Childrens’ speed started dropping in the 1970s, and kids are becoming more snail-like than ever. Electronics are part of the reason why this has happened. According to a Kaiser Foundation study conducted in 2010, children between the ages 8 and 18 spend about 7 hours on digital media a day! Gross!
Screen time can keep children in one spot for a long time, which means it stops them from getting the physical activity they need. Children are not born with the habit to sit and watch screens; this is something they have learned to do by watching and listening to others. Children and teenagers should do at least 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day.
The constant connection to phones, laptops, and tablets causes people to be impatient.
Studies show that most people who view videos tend to abandon online videos if it takes more than a few seconds to load, showing that as technology moves faster, people’s patience grows thinner.
Modern technology is making us lose the art of waiting and patience. Author Professor Frank Partnoy says the ‘crush of technology’ drives us to make instant decisions without giving much thought, although it is often better to be patient and take time to think things over. Not waiting is also causing us to make worse decisions and be less focused too.
Being impatient causes people to: eat fast food, use self-check-out at the grocery store, try the ‘one weekend’ diet, pay extra for overnight shipping, honk when the light turns green, speak in half-sentences, and start things and never finish them. Watching a lot of fast-loading videos causes you to get used to not having to wait for things. When a time comes that you have to wait, you get anxious and impatient.
As you can see, after reading the information above, that obsession over electronics can hurt you. Too much screen time can have serious side effects.

You probably don’t want that stuff to happen to you… do you?
Get together with some of your friends and go to the park (without any electronic devices). Limit the time that you spend on electronics and stay healthy. Get the physical activity you need, remember that it’s okay to wait, keep in mind that too much screen time can hurt your eyes and brain, and socialize with your friends not on an electronic. Stay healthy.
